Your weekly creative retreat- a poem by Brendan Kennelly
6

This week’s creative retreat has Spring in it, but also cycles, beginning and endings intertwined. In the audio of this post, I am sharing a reading, some reflections, and the story of the historic moment on Irish television when poetry this took up the space where words of condolence alone could not fill.

The poem is from the late Irish poet, Brendan Kennelly and is a poem perhaps many of you will be familiar with. It’s become a bit of a national treasure here in Ireland, and always seems to have a bit of extra gleam each time I return to it. There is something so comforting about coming back to poems that feel familiar. For those new to it, I am delighted to introduce you to Begin, by Brendan Kennelly.

Hope you enjoy,

Clare. x

Begin

Begin again to the summoning birds
to the sight of the light at the window,
begin to the roar of morning traffic
all along Pembroke Road.
Every beginning is a promise
born in light and dying in dark
determination and exaltation of springtime
flowering the way to work.
Begin to the pageant of queuing girls
the arrogant loneliness of swans in the canal
bridges linking the past and future
old friends passing though with us still.
Begin to the loneliness that cannot end
since it perhaps is what makes us begin,
begin to wonder at unknown faces
at crying birds in the sudden rain
at branches stark in the willing sunlight
at seagulls foraging for bread
at couples sharing a sunny secret
alone together while making good.
Though we live in a world that dreams of ending
that always seems about to give in
something that will not acknowledge conclusion
insists that we forever begin.

The clip I mentioned. The call with the contestant begins at 5.41, and Brendan reading at 11.44
